Reiki Principles

Having experiened the ghettos in Kyoto, Mikao Usui developed the Five Principles of Reiki also referred to as ‘The Gokai’.The aim of the principles is to guide a practitioner of Reiki and ultimately find the right path. We should all strive to live by these principles and abide by them at all times.

Some Reiki Masters have created their own set of principles based on the original set.

As Reiki and the practices of Reiki healing has evolved and developed, so to have the principles to fit into modern cultures and attitudes.

Reiki principle 1 – ‘Just for today, I will not be angry’

Allowing anger towards oneself, others or the world in general will, over time create blockages in the energy flow and create chakra inbalance, ultimately leading to poor health and lack of  ‘life force energy’.

Let go of anger and bring peace to the mind.

Reiki principle 2 – ‘Just for today, I will not worry’

Constant worry can have a negative effect on your life and the lives of the people around you, creating imbalance and a lack of structure.  Do not worry about something that may or may not occur in the future; instead, live for the moment.

Let go of worry and healing to the body.

Reiki principle 3 – ‘Just for today, I will be grateful’

Leave materialistic thoughts and actions behind. Look around and be grateful of the life that you have and consider those that are less fortunate. A simple thank you, a smile or kind words will generate a moment of positivity that lasts a lifetime.

Be thankful and bring joy into the spirit

Reiki principle 4 – ‘Just for today, I will do my work honestly’

Live a respectable, truthful and honest life. Work with integrity in support of oneself and family and without disrespect for others.

Work honestly and bring abundance into the soul.

Reiki principle 5 – ‘Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing’

The final principles promote kindness to every living thing, everything in nature. Show respect and understanding to everyone.

Be kind and bring love into the will.

Chakra derives from the Sanskrit term meaning ‘spinning wheel’. They are not physical elements and thus can’t be seen. Chakras are energy centres that exist in the spine and the position of the seven chakras are determined by the nadis. Chakras are the point at which the nadis meet.

There exists three main nadis around the spine:-

Sushunma- The Sushunma runs through the centre of the spine from the base to the brain. Keeping the Sushunma clear allows the maximum amount of energy to flow through the body.

Ida- The Ida runs through the left side of spine and is connected to the left nostril

Pingala – The Pingala runs through the right side of the spine and is connected to the right nostril

Each of the seven chakras corresponds to a specific area of the body, behavioural characteristics and different stages of spiritual growth. Practicing yoga, meditation or Reiki Healing and the different techniques associated with these forms allows the practitioner to focus energies during different postures and can help align or rebalance the chakras and thus get the different wheels spinning in the same direction and same speed.

The rebalancing or realignment of the Chakras through the practice of yoga and meditation can help bring Nadis and Chakrasbalance, peace and health to your mind, body and spirit. Each chakra is associated with a particular body location, a color, a central emotional/behavioural issue, as well as many other personal aspects including identity, goals, rights, etc.

The seven chakras are:-

Muladhara- located at the base of the spine, color is red
Svadhisthana- located at the abdomen, genitals and lower back/hip, color is orange
Manipura- located at the solar plexus, color is yellow
Anahata- located at the heart area, color is green
Vishuddha- located at the throat, color is blue
Ajna- located at the brow, color is indigo
Sahasrara- located at the top of head, cerebral cortex, color is violet

Through the movements and postures of yoga and meditation techniques, it is possible learn to focus your concentration and energy to and from the chakras. Developing this level of focus and concentration allows for compensation for areas that may be out of sync with the rest of the body or areas that are inactive.
By rebalancing the energy among the seven chakras, balance and harmony can be achieved. This spiritual energy is known as Kundalini energy, which, in its dormant state can be visualized as a coiled up snake resting at the base of your spine in the Muladhara chakra.

Chakras regulate the flow of energy through our system, controlled, purposeful movements such as those found in yoga and meditation techniques can be extremely beneficial in realigning or rebalancing chakras  and thus create benefits to for physical and emotional wellbeing.

Music Therapy

It is human nature to respond to music in one way or the other. This fact encouraged the use of music in therapies to cure humans from certain disorders. Music therapy is one of the various expressive therapies. It typically consists of an interactive procedure during which a qualified therapist uses a particular type of music to help his clients recover or maintain their health.

Music Therapy in the Modern World

Music therapy is performed with the intent to bring constructive changes in the wellbeing of an individual. The therapeutic benefits of music have been acknowledged since prehistoric era. Even in the modern age, it is getting a wider acclamation. The most noticeable occurrence of music therapy in modern times was when it was used during both WorldWars in the hospitals in United Kingdom where soldiers suffering from emotional or physical trauma were kept. During 1944, The University of Kansas became the first university in the USA to offer a degree programme in music therapy. Nowadays, many academic institutes offer various courses in music therapy.

Effects of Music Therapy on Humans

Recent researches have revealed that music has profound effects on human body as well as psyche: music with a strong beat can spark the brainwaves to reverberate in synchronization with the beat; fluctuations in brainwaves, caused by music trigger other changes in bodily functions such as breathing and heart rates; music can bring a more positive state of mind and also regulate blood pressure, aid immune system and release muscle tension.

Reiki and Music Therapy

Humans associate different types of music with different times, places, people and occasions. This has led some practitioners, associate music with Reiki. Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing art which requires a Reiki practitioner or Reiki master to remove the negative energies and balance the energies in the recipient to cure him from emotional, mental or physical ailments. Some Reiki practitioners play background music during the session while there are others who do their session in utter quietness. Therefore, playing music during Reiki is not compulsory. Music associated with Reiki is called Reiki music, and is usually soft and gentle in nature. Some practitioners prefer natural sounds such as chirping of birds or cascading of waters while other use instrumental music. As a matter of fact, everyone has a different taste when it comes to music. Forcing someone to listen to relaxation music that he does not like will only cause more stress, not relief.

As Reiki is a spiritual procedure, it needs utmost relaxation and serenity. Therefore, if Reiki music is used during a session, proper attention should be paid before choosing it. Suitable music can help smooth flow of energy during Reiki and boost the results. However, Reiki music can also be listened to on its own, which can be regarded as music therapy.

Music therapy as well as Reiki Healing is an alternate treatment. They work best when used to complement a standard medical treatment. However, using any of these as in place of medical treatment can worsen the condition.

Healing Crystals

Healing crystals are used in a pseudoscientific alternative medicine technique known as Crystal Healing. Fundamentally, it is a form of healing that employs several gemstones and crystals, on different parts of body, as healing tools.

The purpose behind the process is to direct the flow of energy to a particular part of the body in order to bring balance to a person’s energy. The founder or origin of crystal healing is unknown but this practice has been around since the ancient times.

Crystal Placement

Healing crystals are mainly placed on specific parts of the body known as “Chakras” to create an “Energy Grid”. Chakra is a Hindu term which literally means “turning” or “wheel”. The basic concept of Chakra is that there are seven “force centres” or “energy centres” in the human body. It is believed that there are seven energy centres, each having a specific colour associated with it, in humans. Some crystal healers place the same colour crystal as associated with chakra to enhance the energy flow.

Healing crystals are said to direct the flow of energy to particular Chakra or part of body and balance the energy. Furthermore, cleansing the negative energy boosts the process of healing from different ailments. Healing crystals can be used to cure emotional, spiritual, mental as well as physical issues.

Professional crystal healers divulge that Crystals are nothing but tools that can be utilized for healing. They need to be cleared, cleaned and programmed with the “Thought Energy” before they can be used. Crystals are usually cleaned with warm water and a new tooth brush. A crystal is programmed by holding it in the hand, then looking at it and thinking what one wishes to occur. If the recipient is going to wear the crystal in encased in metal, the metal i.e. gold or silver, should be chosen according to the nature of crystal and ailment.

There are professional “Crystal Healers”, while some nurses are also trained for crystal healing. Healing crystals are usually worn by the recipient, however, they can also be kept in pocket, next to patient’s bed or even in the bath.

Most of the people believe that only clear quartz crystal is used as healing crystal. Though it is one of the most versatile and useful crystals, there is not a single all-powerful crystal that can heal every single ailment. Rather, there are several crystals and gems used for healing.

Crystal healers claim that healing crystals have a lot to offer when it comes to healing but there is no scientific evidence to prove their claim. In fact, scientific world has brushed off all the testimonials, of people claiming to be cured with healing crystals, believing their statements to be placebo effect, wishful thinking or cognitive bias. Crystal healing has also been tried on pets but again its results are not backed up by the medical world. Religious scholars have also criticised crystal healing. There are no known side effects of healing crystals, yet relying solely on them and not opting for proper medical treatment can infuriate the ailment.

Reiki Distance Healing

Distance healing or distant healing has the same concept as distant learning. The healer and the recipient might be in different cities, different countries or even different continents during the course of healing. Reiki also allows distance healing. Speaking generally, Reiki distance healing is the process through which Reiki can be sent over distance or time.

Reiki distance healing is also called Reiki Absent Healing or Reiki Distant Healing. To understand how it works, let us discuss the basic concept behind this process.

Reiki is an ancient Japanese healing art established in 1922. Initially, physical presence was deemed necessary for Reiki Healing, however, with further experimentation and developments, it has been found that sending Reiki over distance is as beneficial as a hands-on session.

The basic teachings of Reiki tell that humans, animals and all the other things around us are more than just their physical bodies. For instance, humans have an energy body in addition to their physical body.

Like the physical body needs food for its nourishment, the energy body needs energy. The energy fields absorb this energy, chakras (which are force centres or energy centres) break it down and finally meridians dole it out among different parts of the body.

Why use Reiki distance healing?

Reiki distance healing is believed to be a great option for those who cannot spare enough time for a hands-on session with a Reiki master in person. With the help of distance healing, Reiki can be sent to them while they are working, driving or even sleeping. Reiki practitioners claim that it has instant effect, just like receiving Reiki in person. The Reiki practitioners claim that as energy can be sent anywhere, they can ‘feed’ the energy body without being physically present.

Reiki distance healing energy can also be sent over time i.e. to a past or future event. For example if a person suffered from a trauma in his childhood which is still affecting him in his adulthood, Reiki can be sent back in time to relieve him. By the same token, Reiki can be sent to an upcoming event, such as a competition, exam, a challenging business meeting or any problematic situation, in order to get the desired results.

Only a Reiki Practitioner or Master can send Reiki over distance or time. To do this, first he empowers his hands as well as chakras with the “Power Symbol”. After this he gives Reiki to himself for a few minutes. Then he visualises distance healing symbol and calls its name thrice. Then he visualizes the recipient and sends Reiki to him. The duration for sending Reiki can be different depending upon what level of Reiki is to be sent i.e. physical, spiritual, mental or emotional level of being.

Then the practitioner has to let the recipient take rest, and do Kenyoku (dry bathing) to disconnect from him. Again the practitioner visualizes the power symbol to seal the session. Then he sends Reiki to himself again for a while. Usually, the practitioners contact their recipients afterwards, and ask them about what they felt during the session.
